Tinsel & Turkey

With our four West Sussex seaside venues all just a pebble’s throw apart, we know our patch extremely well…

We are super proud of our local roots and we love our local clientele. But we also love to welcome visitors to Cassino, and to the area. And with the trend for UK-based festive getaways increasing in popularity (a break that is affectionately known as ‘Tinsel & Turkey’), it got us wondering what those visiting our county this Christmas and New Year might like to know. And the more we thought, the more we refreshed our own minds about the wonders on our doorstep.

The first thing to say is that Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Worthing, all traditional seaside towns, have a LOT going for them. Not only have we got a stunning stretch of coastline, but these towns each have a wonderfully rich heritage. So if you’re staying in our neck of the woods this Christmas, be sure to check out the museums in each location. A morning of culture followed by an afternoon’s fun with us is, after all, a pretty balanced way to spend a winter’s day!

We are also blessed with some glorious surrounding scenery in the shape of the South Downs. Perfect for cold but crisp walks (you’ll also find some splendid pubs along the way!), enjoy a seasonal stroll and then toddle along to see if Lady Luck is smiling on you at Cassino.

We’ll even throw in free luxury hot chocolate and specialty coffee to warm you up!

Pantomime is offered in both Worthing and Bognor Regis and we’re practically next door neighbours with the theatres. Both have excellent reputations for the traditional British institution of Pantomime – oh yes they do! – and, as we stay open after the curtain has fallen, you can cheer and boo your socks off before coming on over to us for a little pre-bedtime spin or two.

There’s no shortage of good quality hotels, B&Bs and self-catering properties locally, so whether you’re planning a Christmas escape or a New Year’s Blues-buster getaway, check out your options with our local tourist information sites.

The important fact that links all of our venues and their locations, however, is that we will give you the warmest of welcomes. We have a local history of our own that you can read in our first blog and as you’ll discover, hospitality is in our DNA!

So whether you’re coming to one of our towns to spend Christmas time with friends or family (or to escape them!), or you’re looking for January rejuvenation by the sea, rest assured that at Cassino we’ll do all we can to make your visit happy, fun and enriching.

In the meantime, here’s some fascinating facts about our three locations:

Bognor Regis

  •  Bognor is one of the oldest recorded Anglo-Saxon place names in the county of Sussex
  • Enjoying what some regard to as its own micro climate, Bognor Regis is thought the be the sunniest town in Britain
  • Butlins opened their holiday camp in the town in 1960. It remains a prominent feature (and a major employer) in the town today

Littlehampton

  • Littlehampton is a town where the river (Arun) meets the sea, making it a boating paradise
  • During the eighteenth century the town became a popular holiday destination. It is said that poets and artists flocked here, including Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Constable
  • Organised by the Littlehampton Bonfire Society, Littlehampton’s bonfire procession and firework display has taken place annually since 1952

Worthing

  • Worthing was originally a small mackerel fishing hamlet. Fresh fish is still available from local fishermen
  • Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest while staying in Worthing in the summer of 1894
  • There are 213 listed buildings in Worthing borough and three of these are Grade I listed –  Castle Goring, St Mary’s Church (Broadwater) and The Old Palace (West Tarring)
