From the old song written by William Ward-Higgs in 1907, Sussex by the Sea has become an anthem for our part of the world; a celebratory ditty in praise of all that we locals sometimes take for granted and that ensures few visitors seldom come just the once.
In Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, where Cassino has seaside venues, we often welcome regular holidaying members. Enjoying the area as well as Cassino’s unrivalled hospitality, chatting with these guests reminds us of just how lucky we are to live in one of the very best parts of the country – if not the world!
And so with that in mind, here’s a few of our Top Picks of things to see and do when you’re visiting ‘good old Sussex by the sea’ in springtime.
The South Downs Way: 100 miles long and running entirely within the new South Downs National Park (from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in East Sussex), rest assured that you don’t have to do the whole trail! But picking out a part of it for a morning, afternoon or entire day’s walking is a beautiful way to enjoy some of the finest scenery. By the time you visit us in the evening you’ll be ready for a sit down and some gentle leisure time – but boy will your eyes have enjoyed a visual feast!
End of the Pier: Bognor Regis, Worthing and Littlehampton each boast a pier. These beautiful historic structures each have their own quirks and fascinating history, and are well worth a visit. Littlehampton Pier, for instance, is unusual in that it is located at the mouth of the River Arun – literally where the river meets the sea. As well as a light-house, benches and stunning views, it is a favourite spot for crabbing. Pick a pier and wander the boards in the footsteps of trippers from yesteryear. Finish with a paddle and an ice cream!
Chichester Festival Theatre at 60: Celebrating its 60th year in 2022, Chichester Festival Theatre’s first ever artistic director was Sir Lawrence Olivier. With an international reputation for theatrical excellence, star-studded casts of plays and musicals perform on the unique thrust stage every year. Set in glorious parkland; make sure you take in a show while you are here.
Park life: Talking of parkland, all three of our locations are blessed with pretty parks and green spaces. Perfect for strolling, snoozing and a cuppa, and often home to events, enjoy exploring Hotham Park in Bognor Regis, Mewsbrook and Rosemead parks in Littlehampton and Victoria Park (as well as several others) in Worthing.
Fish & chips: As you might expect, we have some fantastic purveyors of this traditional seaside delicacy! And as you might also expect, everyone has their own opinion when it comes to the best in the area! So either ask locals for a recommendation, or take your tastebuds on a tour. Either way, make sure you eat your battered delights on the beach out of the paper. Bliss!
